Fluoride (F-) is a common constituent of many minerals. Municipal water treatment plants commonly add fluoride to the water for prevention of tooth decay, and they try to maintain a level of 1.5 - 2.5 mg/l. Concentrations above 5 mg/l are detrimental to tooth structure. High concentrations are contained in waste water from the manufacture of glass and steel, as well as from foundry operations. Organic fluorine is present in vegetables, fruits, and nuts. Inorganic fluorine, under the name of sodium fluoride, is a waste product of aluminum and is used in some rat poisons. The MCL established for drinking water by the US EPA is 4 mg/l.

7 stages of Filtration:

Water travels through multiple stages of filtration:

In stage 1, water flows through a solid carbon cartridge for removing volatile organic carbon compounds (VOC's), insecticides, pesticides and industrial solvents.
In stage 2, water flows through a FLUORIDE REMOVAL cartridge. containing fine-mesh pre-resin media to reduce fluorides below 0.5 ppm. Also effectively removes arsenic.

In stage 3,water flows through pre one - micron filter pads (1 micron equals 1/25,000th of an inch), which removes suspended particles such as silt, sediment, cyst (Giardia, Cryptosporidium), sand, rust, dirt, and other un-dissolved matter.

In stages 4 and 5, water flows through a bed of media made of a special high-purity alloy blend of two dissimilar metals - copper and zinc (KDF-55D ®, and KDF-85D ®.) KDF is a major advancement in water treatment technology that works on the electro-chemical and spontaneous-oxidation-reduction (REDOX) principles. Chlorine is instantaneously and almost inexhaustibly oxidized.

Tests on KDF/GAC cartridge have shown 99+% chlorine removal past 20,000 gallons of water. In comparison, carbon cartridges of comparable volumes drop below 90% effectiveness after only 4,000 gallons.

Iron and hydrogen sulfide are oxidized into insoluble matter and attach to the surface of the media. Heavy metals such as lead, mercury, copper, nickel, chromium, cadmium, aluminum, and other dissolved metals are removed from the water by the electrochemical process. They are attracted to the surface of the media, much like a magnet. The media inhibits bacterial growth throughout the entire unit. In fact, it has been shown to be reduced up to 90%, eliminating the need for silver, which is commonly used in carbon-only filters (silver is considered a pesticide by the EPA and, as such, must be registered with them).

Is copper or zinc added to the water in any significant amount? On 2.3 ppm chlorinated water, <0.05 mg/l copper and only 0.46 mg/l zinc were measured. The EPA aesthetic levels are 1.0 mg/l for copper and 5.0 mg/l for zinc. Both zinc and copper are essential minerals for good health - the FDA recommends a daily intake of 15 mg of zinc and 2 mg of copper.

In stage 6, water flows through ion exchange resins, reducing heavy metals such as lead, copper, aluminum, and water hardness.

In stage 7, water flows through granulated activated carbon (GAC). GAC is universally recognized and widely used as an effective adsorbent for a wide variety of organic contaminants, such as chlorine (99.9%), chemicals linked to cancer (THM's, benzine) pesticides, herbicides, insecticides, volatile organic compounds (VOC's), PCB's, MTBE's and hundreds of other chemical contaminants that may be present in water causing bad taste and odors in your drinking water.

Carbon is extremely porous and provides a large surface area for contaminants to collect. Carbon-only filters must also use their capacity for chlorine removal, resulting in a shortened life. They also may use a bituminous coal carbon, which is good at removing chlorine, but not as effective at removing chemicals. We use a high-grade coconut shell carbon that is most effective at removing chemicals. Coconut shell carbon provides a significantly higher volume of micro-pores than either coal, wood or lignite based carbon. As a result, it is more effective than other carbon types in removing trihalomethanes (THM's) and other chemicals from municipally supplied water. Since our REDOX media removes the chlorine before it reaches the carbon, the carbon capacity is not wasted on chlorine and is free to concentrate more effectively on organic contaminants.

There are so many scientific studies showing the direct, toxic effects of fluoride on your body, it’s truly remarkable that it’s NOT considered a scientific consensus by now. It truly amazes me that the medical (and dental) communities are so stubbornly resistant to connect the dots when it comes to the skyrocketing increase of cognitive decline in adults (Alzheimer’s and various dementia’s), and behavioral issues in children (ADD, ADHD, depression and learning disabilities of all kinds).

Fluoridating drinking water for dental health is a swindle of massive proportions.

As award-winning journalist, Christopher Bryson details in his book, The Fluoride Deception, fluoridating water began in the mid 1940’s as a solution to fluoride pollution, generated by the Atomic Bomb Program, and the aluminum industry.

How You Can Keep Your Teeth Healthy Without Fluoride

Fluoride was never your answer in the first place, so don’t fret, thinking that by eliminating this toxin you’ll destroy your child’s teeth (or your own).

Instead, look to your diet for naturally healthy teeth. In fact, most people whose diet includes very little sugar and few processed foods have very low rates of tooth decay. Limiting, or eliminating sugar, and avoiding processed foods -- along with regular cleanings with your natural dentist -- will ensure that your teeth stay healthy naturally.

You can also protect yourself by using only non-fluoride toothpaste, and not receiving fluoride treatments from your dentist. Certain cements, fillings and bonding materials also contain fluoride, so talk to your dentist about non-fluoride options in those cases.

You definitely should NOT give your child additional fluoride supplements, which some dentists will prescribe if you live in a non-fluoridated area. Whereas some other chemicals added to your drinking water will evaporate, fluoride is not one of them. Neither cooking, food processing, nor digestion will remove fluoride. You should also remember to filter not only the water that you drink, but also the water you use to wash vegetables, make ice cubes, and cook with.

In addition to your kitchen, you might want to consider adding filters in your shower and your tub as well, since you will also absorb contaminations through your skin when you shower or bathe.

Arsenic Removal
Inorganic arsenic can be removed by SIR 900.
The process is very pH sensitive and capacity decreases rapidly when the pH is below 5.5 or above 6.0. Arsenite is not removed nearly as well as arsenate; therefore, prechlorination to convert arsenite to arsenate may be required. Arsenic removal is also affected by temperature and by the TDS of the feedwater. Increasing temperature increases capacity while increasing TDS decreases capacity.

Equilibrium capacity for arsenate (1000 PPM TDS, 25 degrees C, 1mg/L. As) is approximately 0.66 lb/cu.ft.
Operating capacity to a 10% leakage end point is approximately 10% of the equilibrium capacity. Regeneration can be accomplished by using 3-4 lbs/cu.ft. of 2-4% sodium hydroxide, over 20-30 minutes,
followed by neutralization with acid to a pH of 5-6.

Lead Removal
Dissolved lead is absorbed by SIR 900 and is not normally regenerable. Capacity for lead is at least 0.4 lb. per cu.ft. while maintaining greater than 98% lead removal. This process is not dramatically affected by flow rate, temperature or TDS. However, pH should be maintained above 6.0 as lead removal drops under acidic conditions and below 10 as lead precipitates under basic conditions.
